Fernando Bujones (born March 9, 1955 in Miami , Florida , † November 10, 2005 there ) was an American dancer and choreographer .

Life

Fernando Bujones was born in Florida in 1955 to Cuban parents. He studied with the Cuban dancer Alicia Alonso and later at the American Ballet Theater in New York .

Fernando Bujones was placed in a row with Rudolf Nurejew , Erik Bruhn , Vaslav Nijinsky and Mikhail Baryshnikov . In his 25-year career as a dancer, he has worked in the most important opera houses in the world and their ballet, such as the American Ballet Theater , the Royal Ballet in London, the Stuttgart Ballet , the Ballet of the Paris Opera , the Royal Danish Ballet , the La Scala in Milan, the Vienna State Opera Ballet , the Australian Ballet , The National Ballet of Canada , the Boston Ballet .

In 1974 Bujones was the first American ever to be awarded a gold medal in the international competition of the world's best dancers in Varna ( Bulgaria ). At his official stage farewell in 1995 at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, he received a 20-minute standing ovation and congratulations from President Bill Clinton .

Fernando Bujones directed the Orlando Ballet in Florida until August 2005. He died of skin cancer .
