The Bunte vetch ( Vicia villosa Roth subsp. Varia (Host) Corb. , Syn. : Vicia varia host , Vicia dasycarpa . Ten ) is a subspecies of the shaggy vetch ( Vicia villosa ) in the genus Vicia in the subfamily Schmetterlingsblütler (Faboideae). It occurs scattered in Central Europe . As a cultivated plant , this species is of no importance because of its tough stalk and is considered inferior.

description

Vicia villosa subsp. varia (host) Corb. is Vicia villosa Roth subsp. villosa relatively dissimilar, but initially the stems, leaves and calyx of the variegated vetch are hairy (hair longer than 1 mm), later balding - with the nominate form, however, very tomentose hairy from the beginning.

Habit and leaves

The colorful vetch is a mostly annual, rarely perennial herbaceous plant . The stem is thin, tough and, like the leaves, scattered and hairy to almost bare.

The pinnate leaves have many leaflets in seven to ten pairs and are smaller than those of V. villosa . They are usually 1 to 2 cm long and 2 to 3 mm wide, rounded to pointed, less often edged, fresh green and slightly hairy.

The stipules are small, the lower half-spear-shaped.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescences are as long to a little longer than the leaves, usually only about five to 15 flowers (rarely with up to 25 flowers) and quite loosely structured.

The flowers are more or less 12 to 17 mm long, protruding and only nodding at the end. The calyx is bell-shaped, often tinged with purple, and has short, almost bald teeth. The lower calyx teeth are lanceolate, longer than the upper, but shorter than the tube. The five petals are mostly purple-violet, rarely white. The wings are lighter than the flag. It blooms from June to August.

Fruits and seeds

The pods are about 2 to 4 cm long and 7 to 10 mm wide, with a little stalk protruding from the calyx. They have two to eight seeds.

The seeds are round, somewhat flattened, dull and purple-brown to black in color.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14.

Occurrence

The Bunte Vicke is native to southern Europe from the Iberian Peninsula to the Balkan countries, Denmark and southern Sweden, as well as Asia Minor, Syria and North Africa.

In Germany it only grows more frequently in eastern Germany, northern Bavaria and south-western Germany.

The colorful vetch grows in grain fields, on roadsides and has similar location requirements as the shaggy vetch . It is particularly popular in Central Europe in the Papaveretum argemones of the Aperion spicae-venti association.
