Apenburg Castle

The castle Apenburg , even large Apenburg or Alteburg called, is the ruin of a lowland castle ( Marsh Castle ) 70 meters south of the borough Apenburg in Altmark Salzwedel in Saxony-Anhalt . In the local register of monuments , the castle ruins are listed as a monument under registration number 094 30524 .

history

The first castle complex, Burg Apenborch, must have been built around the year 1000 and was about 100 meters to the west. It belonged to the noble family von Apenborch and was destroyed with the settlement in 1343.

Apenburg Castle is the second castle complex that was created to secure the Purnitz Pass for the Salzwedel - Gardelegen and Braunschweig - Osterburg roads.

The castle was built in the 13th century at about the same time as the town was built, and in 1351 Margrave Ludwig enfeoffed the von der Schulenburg family with the castle and town. The construction of the castle was completed in 1363. The city received a fortification consisting of a rampart, moat and two gates, which had already disappeared again by the end of the Middle Ages. In 1550 the castle was considered dilapidated. The entire complex was renovated from 1572 to 1584. Then the complex fell into disrepair, so that from 1840 to 1841 some dilapidated buildings were removed. In the course of this, the keep was converted into a lookout tower. In 1848 the ramparts were leveled and the moat filled in. From 1860 the hereditary burial place of the von der Schulenburg was built in the park and the small neo-Gothic memorial chapel was built on the east wall .

Castle complex

The castle, which was built on an artificial hill in a marshy area and protected by a moat and rampart, was surrounded by a six-meter-high wall, with remnants (broken bricks ) of the earlier castle and church. The area of the castle covered 2000 m².

In addition to the dungeon of the castle had a 25-meter three-storey palace on the eastern side, a walkway on the south side and farm buildings on the west side and a gate building on the north side.

In 1572 the castle was renewed and in 1584 the keep was rebuilt, the area being reduced to the current size. The keep was brought from the original height of 11 meters to the current height of 25 meters and provided with battlements and a tower roof. The keep was originally only accessible via the castle.

From the former castle complex, the keep in the northeast corner of the complex, the ogival entrance gate on the north side and the surrounding walls have been preserved.
