Clüversborstel Castle

The Clüversborstel Castle is an abandoned low castle from the late Middle Ages , the remains of which are on the Wieste River in the Reeßum district of Clüversborstel in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district in Lower Saxony .

The castle was built around 1478 by a member of the Clüver family ministerial dynasty and was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War in 1645 and never rebuilt.

Location and structure

The remains of Clüversborstel Castle are located on a slightly elevated hilltop directly on the course of the Wieste, about 1.5 km from Reeßum. At the time it was built, it was a swampy and difficult to access lowland area, with the river representing the border between the Archdiocese of Bremen and the Diocese of Verden . Today the castle is on the outskirts of Clüversborstel, which has developed over time through the settlement of farms in the vicinity of the castle.

In the grounds the outline of the castle in Clüversborstel is bailey and the main castle still visible, as well as the surrounding wall and the moat with two bridges. This makes it one of the best preserved castle stables in the Rotenburg district. The castle consisted in parts of brick . In the 15th century it had a roof covering made of monk and nun roof tiles. In the 16th and 17th centuries, S-pans partially took their place. The windows of the castle complex were partially glazed.

history

It is believed that the castle developed from an aristocratic court of the Clüver ministerial family at the end of the 15th century, which also gave it its name. The castle name Clüversborstel probably means "Clüvers Burgstelle". In 1489 a conflict developed between the Clüver family and the Verden bishop, in the course of which the Clüver plundered the Verden area out of revenge. The bishop then besieged Clüversborstel Castle with artillery without being able to take it. According to a tradition from 1640, the cannonballs were demonstratively built into the wall of a castle building.

During the Thirty Years' War burned troops of generals Johann Tserclaes 1627 bailey off and damaged the main castle . In 1645 the castle was completely destroyed by units of the Swedish military commander Hans Christoph von Königsmarck . Since the Clüver family lacked the financial means, the castle was not rebuilt. A part of the Clüvers family built a mansion in the neighborhood in 1661. The castle ruins were overgrown by vegetation. In later times the castle grounds served as a garden, the heaped humus of which protected the remains of the castle from further destruction.

Excavations

In 2007, the Rotenburg (Wümme) district archeology undertook a first excavation lasting several weeks on the castle grounds . By 2010 there had been a total of five excavation campaigns. A 45 meter long excavation cut was made in the area of the main castle. Two wells were discovered. The recovered finds included stones, crossbow bolts , lead balls, wooden pegs, ceramic shards from vessels, shards of chimney tiles, a thimble and a comb. The findings suggested that some of the rooms had a tiled stove . The archaeological finds of Siegburger stoneware and faience suggest that the house was managed in a representative manner. The animal bones left in the ground as waste contain a high proportion of game , which speaks for a noble lifestyle. The type and condition of the finds, some of them burnt, suggest that they come from the destruction of the castle in 1645. If the castle had been abandoned as planned, most of the objects would have been taken away by the residents.
