Hunteburg Castle (Lower Saxony)
Hunteburg Castle

The castle Hunteburg even Hunteburg called, is the residue of a former castle in the village of Hunteburg the town of Bohmte in the district of Osnabrück in Lower Saxony . - The still-preserved "Roman Bridge" from 1424 is the oldest structure in Hunteburg.

history

Hunteburg Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1324, when the knight Friedrich von Schwege, whose knight family was first mentioned in 1248 with their ancestral home on the property of the same name , sold the necessary land to the Osnabrück bishop Gottfried Graf von Arnsberg . The castle, like Wittlage Castle and Vörden Castle , served as one of the collegiate castles , which were built between 1250 and 1370, to secure the sovereignty of the Osnabrück Monastery , especially against the Vechta Office and the Minden diocese belonging to the Lower Monastery . The bishop also wanted to secure the route from Osnabrück via Dielingen to the County of Diepholz and on to Bremen against any hostilities of the Diepholz counts. The first castle man at the castle was Johann van Bück from 1352 to 1357. In 1358 the castle was surrounded by planks to protect it from enemies . - Hunteburg, named after it, developed around Hunteburg Castle. - The castle experienced its heyday from 1376 to 1402 under Bishop Dietrich von Horne . At the end of the 14th century he is said to have founded a chapel in the castle, in which a priest from Ostercappeln held mass from 1402 . In 1441 the castle was taken by Minden Bishop Albert von Hoya and the place and the country were damaged. In 1442 the Osnabrück bishop Heinrich von Moers took Hunteburg and, after a six-month siege, captured Hunteburg Castle, the last monastery castle.

description

The Hunteburg probably consisted of a tower and a stone house, surrounded by a wooden plank bulwark and a moat fed by the Hunte , a tributary of the Weser . Late 16th century, the castle was by looting and arson dilapidated and was demolished in 1618 completely. 1725 was on the foundations of the castle administration building of the place built. All that remains of the former castle complex is the “ Römerbrücke ”, a stone arch bridge that led to the castle courtyard, and a half-leveled part of the moat.
