Příběnice Castle

The ruins of the Příběnice Castle , also called Pribenitz Castle , are the ruins of a hilltop castle in the municipality of Malšice in the Czech district of Tábor , Jihočeský kraj , on the left bank of the Lainsitz , about eight kilometers southwest of Tábor. On the opposite bank was the smaller Příběničky castle .

history

The area around Příběnice was owned by the Bohemian noble family of Witigones in the 12th century . After the division of the property of Witiko von Prčice , who died in 1194 , it came to his son Witiko von Prčice and Blankenberg , who founded the Rosenberg family . His son Witiko was the first to carry the title "von Příběnice" (Czech: "z Příběnic"), which is why he is accepted as the builder of the Příběnice castle.

The castle served as the center of the rule of the same name . It was supposed to demonstrate the power of the Witigonen and secure their territory. After Witikos death in 1256 it came to his brother, the Bohemian Colonel Marshal and Governor of Styria , Wok von Rosenberg , who was followed in 1262 by his son Heinrich I. von Rosenberg . During the reign of Heinrich's son Peter I von Rosenberg , the castle was expanded and solidly fortified. Under Henry III. von Rosenberg , who belonged to the manor unit ( Panská jednota ), King Wenceslas IV was imprisoned in 1394 at the Příběnice Castle and then brought to the Krumlov Castle .

As Ulrich II von Rosenberg was an opponent of the Hussites , the castle was conquered on November 13, 1420 and in 1428 the town of Příběnice below was destroyed by the Taborites . In 1421 they held Bohuslav von Schwanberg at the Příběnice Castle . After the Battle of Lipan in 1434, the Taborites were forced to give in to the increasing pressure from the Rosenbergs. In June 1437 Ulrich II bought the reign of Přiběnice from the town of Tábor and had the Přiběnice castle and the Přiběničky castle, which both parties used as a refuge, destroyed.

In 1667 the castle and town of Příběnice were described as desolate in the country table .

Castle complex

The castle was built on a rock around which the Lainsitz flows. The castle had an outer bailey , ditches and ramparts. The castle courtyards were located behind the octagonal tower, which is still partially preserved. The castle complex, the layout of which is still recognizable, consisted of four parts. The 14th century castle chapel was destroyed along with the castle in 1437.
