Virnich Castle

The castle Virnich was a Wasserburg in Virnich, a hamlet in Schwerfen , a district of Zülpich in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The castle has not existed for more than 160 years. It was canceled around 1860. In 1808 it still consisted of four wings around an inner courtyard and a mansion , which stood separately as a tower-like building on the eastern corner. The Bruchsteinhof is used today as a horse farm.

In 1306, a nobleman by the name of Knight Godefridus de Veyrnich was first mentioned. He was Herr zu Sönick, located near Bollheim . Then the property came to the noblemen of Hengebach, who were related to the Counts of Jülich . In 1470 the castle was in a feud with Count Dientrich III. burned down by Manderscheid . In 1472 the Manderscheider set Johann von Hengebach prisoner at Virnich Castle. So it must have been built up again by then. After 1518 the castle fell to Dietrich von Mirbach by inheritance . The noble family remained owners until 1817. The last noble owner was the royal Prussian district administrator of Heinsberg Wilhelm von Straeten, who had married Charlotte von Mirbach.

The exact appearance of the castle, which was mentioned in the Jülich knight slip in the 18th century, is not known.
