Lüssem Castle

The castle Lüssem is in Nemmenich , a district of Zülpich in Euskirchen in North Rhine-Westphalia on Rotbach .

In 867 the place Lüssem was mentioned for the first time as the villa Ludesheim of Count Matfried. The castle in the Rotbachaue must have been built in the 13th century, which Johann von Vorst received as a fief from Count zu Jülich in 1323 . It was previously owned by the Prüm Abbey . The castle was not mentioned again until 1572. At that time it was owned by Franz von der Mahr. In 1641 the castle was destroyed by Hessian troops in the Thirty Years War . After the property was rebuilt, according to a contemporary description, it consisted of a solid house surrounded by ditches and secured by a drawbridge , together with a barn and stables. In 1681 the castle fell to Elise von Horrich by inheritance. Elise married Johann Marcus von Wymar (1656–1729) for the second time in 1682. His great-granddaughter, Maria Caroilina Josepha von Wymar (1789–1866) married Franz Freiherr von Dalwigk zu Lichtenfels (1779–1855) from Boisdorf in 1814, whose son of the same name sold the Lüssem manor, which had been leased since the 18th century, into civil hands in 1885.

Of the castle, only the manor house from 1801 is largely preserved today. The trenches are almost completely filled in, the farm buildings have been completely changed.
