The Gülichsburg is a former moated castle on the Mühlengraben shortly before the Rotbach in the Zülpich district of Schwerfen (An der Gülichsburg 5) in the Euskirchen district in North Rhine-Westphalia .
history
The small castle was first mentioned in 1365 in the possession of Wilhelm von Berg as a Jülich fief . Historians assume that the castle used to be the ancestral seat of those von Schwerfen who played a decisive role in the history of Schwerfen.
In 1638, Herr von Kaldenbach sold the castle to Engelbert von Gülich zu Berg after it was called "Gülichsburg". Since the castle was never a knight's seat that could be used as a state parliament , it was never expanded.
In the 19th century, the castle changed hands several times and is still run as a farm today .
description
The four-wing castle complex is grouped around the inner courtyard with the manor house and farm buildings. The actual castle house is a late Gothic building and has been preserved in the western half from the time it was built around 1500. The farm buildings were renewed on older foundations in 1830.
