Nemmenich is located in the Zülpich Börde southeast of Zülpich. Neighboring towns are Lüssem, Rövenich , Zülpich, Ülpenich and Niederelvenich . The state road 162 runs on the northern edge of the village and the federal road 56 on the western edge of the village . Nemmenich lies in the lowlands of the Rotbach .

history

The place name proves that Nemmenich was a Celtic settlement. The first written spelling for the place is Nomenich . It dates from 1140. But as early as 1459 the place was named Nemmenich . The number rose from 180 inhabitants in 1767 to almost 700 today.

On July 1, 1969, Nemmenich was incorporated into Zülpich .

traffic

The community has a breakpoint on the western outskirts of Nemmenich for the Düren – Euskirchen railway line , which was closed in 2012 by DB Station & Service . The city of Zülpich then took over the breakpoint and, supported by citizens' initiatives, made it possible to restore it. The breakpoint was then reopened in July 2013. Immediately on the Nemmenich platform is barrier post 12, a small brick building .

Churches

Chapel of St. Giles

The current parish church was built in 1884–86 . Before that there was a small old Romanesque church there , but it was only about 10.50 x 5.90 m. The new church, consecrated in 1886, was built in Gothic style. The building as well as the organ and the enclosure wall of the churchyard are under monument protection .

In the hamlet of Lüssem, which belongs to Nemmenich, is the Romanesque chapel of St. Giles , which was built around 1200.

Lauvenburg

The Lauvenburg is a two-part moated castle from the 14th century. The water flows in via the mill ditch .

The manor house surrounded by a moat is an angular building with a small inner courtyard. The bailey from 1868 to the east of the manor house consists of two long, mostly two-storey brick buildings that are used as a barn , stables and a small residential building. The rectangular former farmyard is closed on the northeast side, between the farm buildings, by a brick wall. The entrance gate to the castle is located in this wall. The castle complex can be reached via two bridges, one that leads to the outer bailey and another that leads to the manor house. The entire facility is a listed building.

Lüssem Castle

It is a former one-piece water castle complex (four wings around an inner courtyard) from the 13th century.

In the late Middle Ages a second castle complex was built, which was destroyed in 1641 and later rebuilt. In 1801 the house was rebuilt. In the period that followed, the moats were filled in and the entire complex, which has almost been preserved as a one-piece moated castle, was modernized. It is a listed building.
