Bessenich is located in the Zülpicher Börde directly on the Neffelbach . The district borders directly on the Düren district . Neighboring towns are Sievernich in the Düren district and in the urban area of ​​Zülpich the districts of Geich , Rövenich and the city of Zülpich itself.

history

The place is first mentioned as Bissenich in 1127. In 1816 Bessenich only had 141 inhabitants. From 17 houses in 1670, the number has increased to around 145 today. Politically, Bessenich belonged to the Nemmenich mayor until 1835 . Bessenich had its own mayor's office since 1856. The town fared better economically than other municipalities due to the construction of the Sieger paper mill in 1878. It still exists today under a different owner, Smurfit Kappa Zülpich Papier . In 1910 the place got a water pipe and the first street lighting with four lamps was put into operation in 1911.

On July 1, 1969, Bessenich was incorporated into Zülpich .

church

The chapel in the village fell to the parish church of Zülpich in 1804. In 1850, after Bessenich had become a parish , the existing chapel was expanded with an extension and a tower. Another expansion of the church was carried out in 1930. The completion and inauguration dates from September 21, 1932.

Since 1925 the place has belonged to the Deanery Zülpich.

Until 1962 the place had a connection to the railway line from Distelrath via Nörvenich and Zülpich to Embken . Electric passenger transport from 1958 onwards was converted to buses as early as 1960.

The sports club SV Rhenania Bessenich has existed in Bessenich since 1928. Today the club has three senior teams and one women's team, as well as some youth teams.
