Burgstall Seckendorf

The Burgstall Seckendorf is an abandoned medieval castle in place of the local chapel in Seckendorf (Kapellenweg 11), a current part of the market town of Cadolzburg in the Fürth district in Bavaria .

history

The castle mentioned in 1154 was probably the seat of the Lords of Seckendorff , who had their origins in Seckendorf. On May 1, 1254, Heinrich von Seckendorff and on October 16, 1259 his brothers Arnold, Burkhard and Ludwig von Seckendorff were first mentioned in a document. The Seckendorffers were widely ramified and of formative importance for the Franconian region for centuries. Only the castle chapel of the former castle complex has survived to this day.

chapel

The Seckendorfer Chapel was laid out in the 12th to 13th centuries as a simple sandstone building. After 1460 the chapel was decorated with frescos . After there was no threat of demolition at the beginning of the 19th century, the chapel served as a house and barn for almost a hundred years. After that, the chapel was saved from deterioration and the frescoes were only exposed and secured in 1983/84. Today, regular church services and concerts are held again.
