Burkhard Ulrich Drescher (born June 7, 1951 in Neuss ) is a former local politician ( SPD ) in North Rhine-Westphalia and was most recently Lord Mayor of Oberhausen . In 2004 he left politics. After a subsequent activity in the real estate industry, he is now the managing director of Innovation City Management GmbH in Bottrop.

Drescher initially worked as a chemical laboratory assistant and later as a chemical technician at Bayer AG in Dormagen . He made up his Abitur and studied economics, chemistry and politics. From 1980 to 1987 he worked as a teacher. He was involved in the SPD, in which he a. a. Treasurer of the Lower Rhine district was. Drescher was u. a. Council member in Kaarst and was elected city treasurer in Grevenbroich in 1987 . In 1990 he first became city director in Oberhausen, and in 1991 senior city director . In 1997 the city council elected him to succeed Friedhelm van den Mond as mayor. Since the so-called double top , i. H. the separation of the offices of ( lord ) mayor and (lord) city director as head of administration in North Rhine-Westphalia had been abolished in 1994, with Drescher's election both functions coincided for the first time in one person. Van den Mond had resigned two years before the end of the legislative period in order to enable Drescher to go to the 1999 local elections with an official bonus , in which the city leaders were directly elected for the first time. As expected, Drescher won the election as a candidate for the SPD. Drescher's name is associated with the urban development concept Neue Mitte Oberhausen , which aimed to cope with the consequences of the decline of the coal and steel industry, building a new Oberhausen city center on industrial wasteland between the historically grown centers of Alt-Oberhausen, Sterkrade and Osterfeld. After the end of the legislative period (2004), he decided not to run again. His successor was Klaus Wehling (also SPD).

After leaving politics, Drescher first moved to the board of RAG-Immobilien AG. In August 2006 he became CEO of the Gagfah Group , the largest listed housing company in Germany, of which the Fortress Investment Group is the majority shareholder . Until April 6, 2009 he was chairman of the management there. Drescher has been working as an independent management consultant since October 2009 and is the managing director of BDC Consulting GmbH & Co KG, a consulting company. Since September 2011 he has been Managing Director of InnovationCity Management GmbH in Bottrop. He has also been a member of the supervisory board of the listed housing company Vonovia since 2014.
Private life
Drescher is married and has four children.
