biography

The son of a Norwegian father and Irish mother began his career as a singer in the late 1960s with the Staten Island band Vagabond Missionaries. In 1971 he co-founded the New York Dolls, which broke up in 1977.

In 1978 Johansen's first solo album appeared, which only sold slowly. The next studio album In Style (1979) was produced by Mick Ronson and moved more towards pop music, as did the following Here Comes the Night (1981). When the album Sweet Revenge (1984) flopped, Johansen had to rethink his career.

At the end of 1984 he reappeared as Buster Poindexter. The music style was now more towards R&B and jazz . In 1987 Poindexter had a big hit with Hot Hot Hot . In the second half of the 1980s Johansen began to work increasingly as an actor, while he continued to make music as Buster Poindexter.

In 2004 there was a reunion of the New York Dolls. In the meantime Johansen appeared again under his own name.
