Antoni Laubitz (born June 7, 1861 in Pakość , Posen Province , Prussia ; † May 17, 1939 in Gniezno , Poznan Voivodeship , Poland ) was a priest from 1888 and Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Gniezno-Posen and a social activist who, because of outstanding achievements in the social field in 1938 received the order Polonia Restituta .

biography

Antoni Laubitz took classes in Inowrocław in his native Kujawien, then in Wielkopolska Trzemeszno and in Poznan , where he joined the School of St. Mary Magdalene with Jan Kasprowicz befriended. He studied theology from 1884 to 1887 at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg and from 1887 to 1888 in the Higher Primate Seminary in Gniezno (Gniezno).

He was ordained priest on March 11, 1888 in Posen by the hand of the Archbishop of Posen and Gniezno, who was also Primate Poloniae Julius Dinder . He then took over the duties of vicar in the parish of St. Nikolai in Inowrazlaw (Inowrocław) and was a religion teacher at the Prussian Royal High School there . In 1895 he became the administrator of this parish and four years later the pastor of the parish Mariae Namen in Inowrocław. There he founded a tree nursery . On the 900th anniversary of the martyrdom of Adalbert of Prague in 1897, a monument to the oldest patron saint was erected on his initiative . On his initiative, the Romanesque church, which was destroyed by fire in 1834, was also restored.

He was a patriot who supported the fight against the occupiers of Poland and also defended the school strikers in 1906 against the politics of the Kulturkampf . Significantly, he contributed at the announcement of and development of the Dziennik Kujawski (Polish-language daily newspaper covering the area Kuyavian ), edited by Józef Chociszewski . He was also the chairman of the supervisory board of the People's Bank of Inowrocław.

After the establishment of the Second Polish Republic , he moved to Gniezno in 1920 , where he took on a pastor's position at the Arch-Cathedral of Gniezno . In 1924 Pope Pius XI appointed him . the auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Gniezno-Poznan and titular bishop of Iasus . He was ordained bishop on January 18, 1925 by Edmund Dalbor . Since his stay in Inowrocław, philanthropy meant a lot to him and, among other things, he supported the expansion of the Caritas structures.

On March 10, 1938 he was awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta for his outstanding achievements in the social field.

He died of natural causes in 1939 and was buried in a chapel of the Arch-Cathedral of Gniezno.
