Butetamate is a drug that was used as an antitussive ("cough blocker").

Its cough suppressant effect corresponds roughly to that of codeine , but in contrast to this it has only a very weak analgesic effect , has a bronchodilator effect , has no potential for dependence , does not affect the ability to react and does not lead to respiratory depression .

Chemistry and isomerism

The drug is structurally related to methadone . Butetamate is chiral and was used as a 1: 1 mixture ( racemate ) of ( R ) and ( S ) enantiomers .

Chemically related active ingredients ( analogues ) are butamirate , oxeladine and pentoxyverine .
