Buzzards Bay is a census-designated place (CDP) in Barnstable County in the US state of Massachusetts . The population was 3859 (as of 2010).

geography

Buzzards Bay is located at the end of a bay , Buzzards Bay and on the northern side of the Cape Cod Canal , which flows into Cape Cod Bay . Opposite, on the south side of the canal, is Bourne . The closest major city, Boston, is around 75 kilometers to the north.

history

The first settlers called the place and the bay "Buzzards Bay" because of the birds found there, but confused the bird species, because it was not the turkey vulture ( Cathartes aura ), called buzzard in English , but the osprey ( Pandion haliaetus ) (English: Osprey ) meant.

From time to time it is considered to rename the place in the more fitting name Osprey Bay , but so far without success. The Massachusetts Maritime Academy has been located in Buzzards Bay since 1891 . Due to the attractive location of the place, tourist offers are becoming increasingly important.

US Highway 6 runs through Buzzards Bay . A railway lift bridge , the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge over the Cape Cod Canal, connects Buzzards Bay with Bourne and is used by the CapeFLYER railway line . The Logan International Airport is located at a distance of about 80 kilometers to the north.

Demographic data

In 2010 a population of 3859 people was determined, which means an increase of 8.7% compared to the year 2000. The mean age at this point in time was 44.3 years, above the value for Massachusetts, which was 39.5 years. 19.8% of today's residents are from Irish immigrants . Other significant immigrant groups during the early days of the place came from Italy ( 15.2%) and England ( 10.0%) .
