Caesar von Witzleben

Caesar Dietrich von Witzleben (born December 4, 1823 in Kamenz , † April 7, 1882 in Dresden ) was a German historian , archivist and editor .

Witzleben came from the Thuringian noble family von Witzleben and was the son of Gustav von Witzleben (1793–1866).

From 1841 to 1845 he studied law and political science at the State University of Leipzig . In 1856 he was royal commissioner and responsible editor for the Leipziger Zeitung .

In 1880, after the death of Karl von Weber, Witzleben took over the management of the main royal state archive in Dresden . In 1881 he was put in charge of the work on the Codex diplomaticus Saxoniae regiae . After four weeks of illness, Witzleben died on April 7, 1882 in Dresden. He was an honorary knight of the Order of St. John.

Witzleben had been married to Luisa Freiin von Gregory since 1859; the marriage remained childless.
