CB Lucentum Alicante is a Spanish basketball club from Alicante .

history

The association was founded in 1994. He was allowed to start directly in the second Spanish basketball league, the Liga Española de Baloncesto. Lucentum convinced there and made it to the semi-finals of the play-offs. In this, a victory would have meant promotion, but Alicante was defeated by Gijón Baloncesto . The following seasons went worse, the team occupied until the 1998/99 season regularly a midfield place and did not get in the play-offs beyond the quarter-finals.

With José Calderón , who is now playing at the New York Knicks , the team dominated the league in the 1999/00 season. The main round was confidently finished first, in the semifinals, the decisive game series for promotion, the team prevailed 3-2 against CE Lleida Bàsquet . Victory in the final also secured the championship. For the first first division season in the ACB league , the club changed its name to Proaguas Costablanca . The team did not meet the requirements of the 18-club league and was relegated in seventeenth. Back in League 2 and active again with the old name Lucentum , they prevailed in the decisive semi-final against Ourense Baloncesto and rose again. Bàsquet Manresa was able to defeat the team in the final and gave the club the second second division championship. In this year of promotion, the club also won the Copa Príncipe de Asturias , the cup of the Spanish second division,

The second first division year went much better. The main series was completed eighth, combined with the first participation in the play-offs for the Spanish championship. As eighth, Lucentum had to compete against the main round first, FC Barcelona . After all, Lucentum won one of the four games against the favorite, who later became champions. Another name change followed to Etosa Alicante Costablanca . Under this name, the team could not confirm the good result of the previous year and finished fourteenth. At the beginning of the season, the team had to play with a double burden, because the club took part in a European Cup for the first time . In the ULEB Cup , they did respectably in the group stage and won three of the ten games, but were eliminated anyway.

In the 2004/05 season, the club made it into the play-offs for the championship for the second time. With 5th place they also achieved the best placement to date after completing the main round in the ACB league. The team fought an exciting duel against Unicaja Málaga for a place in the semi-finals. Alicante surprisingly led the series 2-0 after two games, but Malagá won the comparison 3-2. In 2006, the club took part in the ULEB Cup a second time and came under the last 16. Alicante was 12th in the league, and the following year they were relegated to penultimate for the second time after 2001. For the 2007/08 season, which was tackled with the goal of direct promotion, the club changed its name again. As Alicante Costablanca you lost the decisive game for promotion just 78:79 against Tenerife CB . The following year, the club managed to take this step, and the final of the Copa Principe de Asturias was victorious against Club Melilla Baloncesto .

Just in time for the first season in the ACB league for two years, the club name was changed again, this time in Meridiano Alicante . The team did not perform well in the first two seasons. As 15th or 16th you only narrowly escaped the descent.

In the 2011/12 season, it became increasingly difficult to keep the game going due to severe financial bottlenecks and high debt. The players were not impressed by the problems and reached the championship play-offs for the third time in the club's history. There Alicante had no chance against FC Barcelona. In the most important Spanish cup competition, the Copa del Rey de Baloncesto , they got to the quarter-finals and were eliminated there against the Catalans . At the end of the season, the club, which was renamed Lucentum Alicante again, for financial reasons, rose voluntarily to the second division. The vacated starting place in the ABC league got CB 1939 Canarias .

Meanwhile, Lucentum is trying to rebuild the Liga Española de Baloncesto in the 2012/13 season.
