Cabo de Hornos (" Cape Horn ") is one of the two municipalities of the Chilean province of Antártica Chilena in the Región de Magallanes y de la Antártica Chilena . Cabo de Hornos is the southernmost administrative unit in America , but not Chile, whose Antarctic territory also has the status of a municipality as Antártica .

The municipality, created in 1927 by decree no. 8583, was named Navarino until 2001 after the island of Navarino , on the north coast of which the main town of Puerto Williams is located.

The municipality of Cabo de Hornos is made up of numerous islands and archipelagos around the Beagle Channel . The southernmost of these archipelagos are the Diego Ramírez Islands , Hermite Islands , Wollaston Islands and the Ildefonso Islands , the easternmost those of Lennox, Picton and Nueva , to which the main island Navarino and Isla Hoste connect in the west . The west of the municipality is formed by Isla Londonderry and its offshore islands, and the southwest of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego , the main island of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. The area of ​​the municipality amounts to a total of 15,853.7 km².

In the west of Cabo de Hornos is the Alberto de Agostini National Park , in the south of the Cabo de Hornos National Park .

Demographics

According to the 2012 census, the population of the municipality is 1677. The rural population recorded in the 2002 census was 13.7%. Cabo de Hornos is divided into three census districts, Isla Navarino , Hoste, and Darwin , for census purposes .

The largest town in the municipality is Puerto Williams . Another permanently inhabited place is Puerto Toro .
