Ecological project Cajamarca

The Ecological Youth Center CEJ (Centro Ecológico Juvenil) was founded in 1990 in the municipality of Cajamarca through an initiative of the Sucre University of Education. The aim was to combine reforestation with forest management and regional development in this arid and erosion-prone region. In the 25 years of existence of the CEJ, the initially skeptical attitude of the local smallholders has long since turned into active participation. Hundreds of thousands of trees have been planted on an area of 500 hectares in the barren high Andes region, which have permanently changed the appearance of the mountain valley: The climate has become more balanced and the newly formed humus layer binds the precipitation, so that the city of Sucre is also supplied the water from this brook valley has now doubled. Particularly noteworthy is the transfer of ownership of 85 hectares of reforestation land to six young girls from Campesino families in the Cajamarca Valley, on the condition that they reforest their land for twenty years with the support of the CEJ.

The co-initiator of the project is the German Annelie Dehmel, who, together with her husband Peter, has now received several awards for her sustainable project work:
In 2010, Annelie Dehmel received the "Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho" award for special social, cultural and ecological achievements in the Chuquisaca district /Bolivia.
In 2013 she received a personal award for special commitment to human rights from the "Asamblea de Derechos Humanos" in Chuquisaca.
And in 2015 she was awarded the “Trophée de Femmes” prize by the “Fondation Yves Rocher” in Stuttgart for her exemplary commitment to the environment.
