Padilla is a country town in the Chuquisaca department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia . The city's original name was San Miguel de La Laguna , later it was renamed San Juan de Rodas and then La Laguna .

Location in the vicinity

Padilla is the seat of the administration of the Tomina province and the central place of the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Padilla . The city lies at an altitude of 2086  m in one of the side valleys on the eastern slope of the Bolivian Cordillera Central .

Padilla lies in the transition area between the Andes mountain range of the Cordillera Central and the Bolivian lowlands.

The mean average temperature of the region is around 18 ° C (see Padilla climate diagram) and fluctuates only slightly between 14.5 ° C in June and July and just under 20 ° C from November to January. The annual precipitation is around 650 mm, with a pronounced dry season from May to August with monthly precipitation below 10 mm, and a humidity period from December to February with 110 to 120 mm monthly precipitation.

Padilla is located at a distance of 187 kilometers by road east of the departmental capital Sucre .

The city is located on the 976 kilometer long highway Ruta 6 , which connects Sucre with the Bolivian lowlands and the local metropolis Santa Cruz . The road to Sucre is unpaved for the 120 kilometers from Padilla to Tarabuco and only then has an asphalt surface.

Due to the historical population distribution, the region has a significant proportion of Quechua population, in the Municipio Padilla 20.3 percent of the population speak the Quechua language.
