Calatayud is a turn 5,940 hectares large vineyards in Spain . It is located at altitudes between 550 and 880 m above sea level. NN. and comprises large parts of the Comunidad de Calatayud , a total of 46 municipalities in the valley of the Ebro and the valleys of its tributaries Jalón, Jiloca, Manubles , Mesa, Piedra and Ribota, in the western part of the province of Saragossa ( Aragon ). The vineyards are cultivated by approx. 2700 winemakers and there are 9 bodegas . Calatayud received DO status in February 1990

The export share is 70%. Fresh and fruity white wines , strong rosé wines based on the Garnacha grape variety and tasty, warm red wines are produced.

The soils are fertile, brownish limestone soils on marl and sandstone ground, with good ventilation and drainage. The Calatayud area is the most hilly wine-growing area in the Aragon region.

The climate is predominantly continental, mild, semi-arid to dry, with relevant day-night temperature differences during the ripening period, which promote the slow ripening of the grapes and thus the quality. The annual average temperature is between 12 and 14 ° C, there is a risk of frost during a 5 to 6 month winter time. The average annual rainfall is around 300-550 l / m².
