Calcium lactate gluconate , a double salt of lactic and gluconic acid , is a white, odorless, tasteless, crystalline solid .
properties
The calcium content is between 10% and 13%. The calcium content, like the molar mass, results from the mixing ratio of calcium lactate (13% calcium) to calcium gluconate (9% calcium).
A favorable molar ratio of the two anions (lactate and gluconate) causes a synergistic increase in solubility; Thus, calcium lactate gluconate with 400 g / L has the second highest solubility (after calcium chloride ) among all calcium salts and at the same time has a very good bioavailability of the calcium it contains . For comparison: the solubility of calcium lactate is 66 g / L, that of calcium gluconate 35 g / L.
use
In addition to the long-known positive influence of calcium on bone density (see osteoporosis ), recent studies show that with an adequate calcium intake, the risk of overweight and obesity also decreases. For these reasons, calcium lactate gluconate is used for calcium fortification as an additive for food and dietary supplements ( functional food ). It is also used in pharmaceuticals and animal feed . For example, it is used in effervescent tablets as a source of calcium.
