description

Male cones

Callitris muelleri grows as an evergreen shrub or tree that can reach heights of up to 6 meters. The branches go up straight from the trunk.

The green to blue-green leaves are 4 to 10 millimeters long and the back of the leaves is conspicuously keeled.

The male cones stand together in groups and are egg-shaped to obovate-shaped with a length of up to 3 millimeters. The female cones standing singly or in small groups on the branches are flattened-spherical in shape with a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters. Each cone contains six thick cone scales and numerous seeds. The seeds can remain in the cones for several years after ripening before they are released and the cones fall from the branches. The dark brown seeds are about 2 to 4 millimeters in size and have two or three wings.

Occurrence and endangerment

The natural range of Callitris muelleri is on the coastal regions of central New South Wales . It extends there from Glen Davis and Mount Coricudgy in the north to Nowra in the south. A single population resides near Eden .

Callitris muelleri mainly grows on shallow, rocky or sandy soils which have formed on sandstone . The species grows mainly on steep slopes.

Callitris muelleri is classified as "not endangered" in the IUCN Red List . It is pointed out, however, that a new review of the hazard is necessary.

Systematics

It was first described in 1868 under the name ( Basionym ) Frenela muelleri by Filippo Parlatore in Prodromus Systematis Naturalis Regni Vegetabilis , Volume 16 (2), page 450. George Bentham and Joseph Dalton Hooker transferred this species as Callitris muelleri in 1882 in the Systematic Census of Australian Plants ... , page 109 into the genus Callitris .
