Calvin Palmer

Calvin Ian Palmer (born October 21, 1940 in Skegness , † March 12, 2014 in Brighton ) was a British football player who was active in English and South African club football.

Athletic career

Palmer moved in March 1956 from Skegness Town to Nottingham Forest in the First Division . Initially only used sporadically, he developed into a regular under coach Andy Beattie , who was signed up in 1960, and was at times team captain .

In September 1963, Palmer moved to league rivals Stoke City , who paid him a transfer fee of GBP 30,000 . At the side of players like Dennis Viollet , Peter Dobing , John Ritchie and Jimmy McIlroy , he stood with the team coached by Tony Waddington in 1964 in the final of the League Cup , which was only decided in a replay in favor of Leicester City .

In February 1968, Stoke City sold Palmer to Sunderland AFC for £ 70,000 . His stay there, however, was marked by a falling out with the management, as a result of which he only found a new club outside of England and moved to South Africa in 1970. There he played briefly for Cape Town City FC and Hellenic FC .

In 1971, Dennis Viollet, now working as a coach, signed up for Crewe Alexandra , but his stay at the club, which was accruing in the Fourth Division, was short-lived. He then hired himself for a short time at Hereford United and then played again in South Africa at Durban United and Berea Park .

Palmer died of cancer in a hospice in spring 2014 , and he donated his body to research.
