Cameia (also Kameia , also Lumege or Lumeje after its capital ) is a district in eastern Angola . Well-known is the Kameia National Park , which is largely located in the Cameia district.

history

From the middle of the 19th century, the Portuguese colonial administration extended its direct control to the entire area of the colony of Angola. She often met resistance from local rulers, also in the area of today's Cameia district. The Portuguese then built a fortress here, too, which they named Forte Cameia , after Kameia, a soba (local head) of the Luvale , who was killed by Portuguese troops . A town called Forte Cameia developed around the fortress. On May 12, 1965 Cameia was raised to a small town ( Vila ) and the seat of its own district.

After the country gained independence, the district dropped its Portuguese place name Forte Cameia and has been known as Cameia or Kameia since then, while the actual place has since been referred to as Lumege or Lumeje. Occasionally the district is named Lumege or Lumeje after its capital, and in other cases the city of Lumeje is named after the Cameia or Kameia district.

administration

Cameia is a district ( Município ) of the province of Moxico . Around 40,000 people live in Cameia County (2013 estimate). The 2014 population census should henceforth ensure reliable population figures.

The district of Cameia consists of only one municipality (Comuna), which is also called Cameia.

The seat of the district and the municipality is the city of Lumeje (also Lumege).

Education and health

In 2013, around 11,000 students were taught by 302 teachers in Cameia County. There are 12 permanent and some temporary schools in the district, from elementary school to secondary school to 12th grade.

As part of the government's reconstruction programs after the peace treaty in 2002, Cameia received its first district hospital with a birth center, analysis laboratory and surgery center.

traffic

Cameia is on the Benguela Railway . On November 29, 2013, the last section to Luau was opened again after it had been idle for many years as a result of the Angolan civil war (1975-2002). At the same time, the new Cameia train station was opened.

economy

The district of Cameia is strongly characterized by agriculture. Fishing in the rivers of the district is also important. As a result of the declining flow of refugees and, in particular, the general economic recovery after the end of the civil war in 2002, agricultural production in the district has grown significantly again. The district expects the reopening of the rail link to generate significant growth impulses, for example through the resumption of rice cultivation . Production is to be increased further through further training measures, particularly for farmers who are organized as cooperatives .

The district administration also hopes for future economic impulses from tourism. Major attractions for visitors include the Kawewe 1 and Kawewe 2 rock art , the Kameia National Park , and the remains of the colonial Forte Cameia fortress . Investments from the tourism industry are still a long way off. In addition, the lack of bank counters in the district has hindered economic development (as of May 2013).

The completion and commissioning of a branch of the public bank BCI ( Banco de Comércio e Indústria ) in Cameia was announced for mid-2014 . The economic development in the district is now to be further promoted through clear relief in money transactions and the payment of salaries, but in particular through the now possible lending to small farmers and local agricultural cooperatives.
