Habit of the lancet-leaved bellflower

The lance- leaved bellflower ( Campanula baumgartenii ), also called lance-leaved bellflower or Baumgarten's bellflower , is a rare species from the large genus of bellflowers ( Campanula ). At times it was listed under the name Campanula rotundifolia var. Lancifolia as a variety of the round-leaved bellflower . The species is named after the German doctor and botanist Johann Christian Baumgarten .

description

The herbaceous plant is 40 to 86 cm high. On the mostly upright, occasionally arching stalk with its lanceolate, occasionally ovate-lanceolate leaves sit upright, pale blue flowers nodding as a bud. They are 1.5 to 2 cm long. The stem leaves are densely hairy underneath. The flowering period is between July and September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 68.

Possible confusion

The plant is very similar to the round-leaved bellflower and difficult to distinguish from it due to the great variability of both species. A certain characteristic that is also recognizable for the layperson, however, is the sprout roots , which are occasionally thickened in the shape of a beet , and the ability of the lancet-leaved bellflower, in contrast to the round-leaved bellflower, to multiply through runners .

Distribution and locations

The plant is mainly native to Germany and has two distribution centers, a smaller one in the Taunus and a larger one in the Palatinate , which extends to France ( Lower Alsace , Lorraine ). It is rare and is therefore considered to be endangered. In its smaller distribution center, the Taunus, around 40 locations (including the nature reserves Reifenberger Wiesen and Upper Emsbachtal ) with around 5500 individuals are known (2002). Since the inclusion in a species protection program from 1998 to 2000 and further research, especially by Karl Peter Buttler , the population in Hesse can be regarded as stable; no further details are known for the larger populations in Rhineland-Palatinate .

The lancet-leaved bellflower prefers fresh, partially shaded, but warm locations on weakly acidic and rather nitrogen-poor soils, especially in poor meadows , but also on roadsides and occasionally in beech forests . In Central Europe it is a character species of the Tezcrio-Campanuletum baumgartenii from the Trifolion medii association.

ecology

The lancet-leaved bellflower is a bee pasture .

Systematics

One can distinguish the following subspecies:

  • Campanula baumgartenii subsp. baumgartenii : It occurs from eastern France to southwest Germany.
  • Lower Austria bellflower ( Campanula baumgartenii subsp. Beckiana (Hayek) Podlech ; Syn .: Campanula beckiana Hayek ): It occurs in the Eastern Alps from Austria to former Yugoslavia.
