In 1995 she won the journalist award "Foreign - so what?", Which the Foreigners Commissioner of Lower Saxony had awarded. In 1996/97 she completed an internship at the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung , after which she worked as an editor at the Frankfurter Rundschau from 1999 to 2012 .

Since 2004 she has been a lecturer at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences until 2016 she worked in the media department, since 2014 she has taught in the social sciences department and since the 2015/16 winter semester at the Hessian University for Police and Administration.

In 2007 Canan Topçu published the book “ EinBÜRGERung - Reading book about becoming German. Portraits, interviews, facts. “, Which received a lot of positive feedback from the public, in the feature pages and from literary criticism and promoted public discussion about the situation of migrants in Germany. She examines the feelings and experiences of “strangers” in Germany, reflecting on her own experiences with being “Turkish” and critically examining the naturalization procedure in Germany. She has contributed to several book publications on related topics such as: B. What do you live? (2005).

She has been working as a freelance journalist since 2012 - for radio, print and online media as well as publications by ministries, foundations and educational institutions. Topçu's texts have appeared in Die Zeit , Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and Spiegel Special Islam , among others . Her journalistic work focuses on migration and integration , with a particular focus on the situation of Muslim women and Turkish migrants in Germany.

Topçu also works as a moderator and speaker. She is also involved on a voluntary basis in various committees - among others in the Frankfurt support group of the Round Table of Intercultural Journalism and on the board of the Hessian Forum for Religion and Society. Topçu is a co-founder of the Neue Deutsche Medienmacher (NDM) and coordinator of the NDM-Rhein-Main-Netzwerk.

Positions

In October 2013 Topçu criticized immigrants who adapt the spelling of their name to the phonetics typical of the country . This step is subject to a wrong understanding of integration and is an ingratiation to the locals. Instead, she pleaded for help with pronouncing the original names correctly.

In an article in ZEIT in November 2013, Topçu replied to the Dortmund journalism professor Horst Pöttker for basic reasons not to mention the ethnic origin of criminals in reporting, as provided for in Directive 12.1 of the Press Code, as long as this information provides “no explanation for the crime”: “careless reporting” could “lead to the stigmatization of certain groups”.
