In 2011 she began to work as a freelance journalist, first for various print media such as the Süddeutsche Zeitung, later also for public television channels such as ZDF , 3sat , arte and others. a. Candan Six-Sasmaz focuses on topics such as: People of Turkish origin and other minorities in Germany and Europe, migration and integration of Muslims as well as Turkey and the Middle East.

In her documentaries and reports she often reports on Turkish and Muslim life in Germany and gives unseen insights into the world of the country's largest group of migrants.

In 2015, at the height of the " refugee crisis ", Six-Sasmaz reported in the Süddeutsche Zeitung about the experience of being mistaken for a refugee at a train station in North Rhine-Westphalia and thus receiving more attention and helpfulness than as Germans with a migration background . Before, she would have often felt invisible or even undesirable - on the contrary. "It is not bad that you mix up people at first sight. It is bad that I am noticed for the first time. What is worse, as a German-Turkish woman, has never been treated as well as on those days when I was treated thinks he is a Syrian refugee. "
