Springer & Jacoby is an advertising agency that had its headquarters in Hamburg until the German mother's bankruptcy in 2010. It was one of Germany's largest agencies and operated internationally as an independent network. The independently managed Springer & Jacoby agencies in Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest are still active.

history

The agency was founded on October 3, 1979 by Frank Eiler, Fred Riemel, Holger Nicolai and Reinhard Springer in Hamburg under the name Eiler & Riemel Hamburg .

With the sale of Eiler & Riemel Munich to Team BBDO , the Hamburg branch had to give up its name. As a result, Eiler and Riemel left the agency. Holger Nicolai and Reinhard Springer took over the shares equally. After a year of probation as a copywriter, Konstantin Jacoby joined as a third partner in 1983 . The agency then traded under the names Springer, Nicolai, Jacoby . In 1985 Nicolai left and Springer & Jacoby was born . Jean-Remy von Matt and Holger Jung (later Jung von Matt ) worked for several years as creative managing directors and consulting managing directors at Springer & Jacoby.

The Hamburg shoe store chain Görtz became its first customer in 1980. Own brands like Belmondo were developed. During this time, the campaigns for Görtz and especially for Belmondo received several national and international awards. In 1984 the agency won its first creative awards, including a lion at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival .

In 1985 Holger Nicolai founded his own advertising agency. Reinhard Springer and Konstantin Jacoby took over his shares and from then on operated under the name Springer & Jacoby . Springer & Jacoby dominated the creative scene in 1985, primarily with film and TV spots, and won four gold and 16 other awards at the Art Directors Club (ADC) in one fell swoop . The agency grew rapidly in the following years; in 1987 alone by 100%. In the course of 1988, other major brands switched to Springer & Jacoby, including Reemtsma and Bacardi . In 1991 Springer & Jacoby already had more than 300 employees. In 1993 Springer & Jacoby had big budgets like Görtz, Panasonic , Castrol and Der Spiegel - some for more than ten years. The German Telekom in 1995 a major customer.

In 1995, Springer & Jacoby founded the world's first catalog agency (literature unit) e-fact Ltd. in London, which is the first advertising agency to work completely online. In the following year, 1996, Springer & Jacoby founded the multimedia agency Elephant Seven and thus relied on the Internet as a new communication platform at an early stage.

The Lufthansa was won in 1997 as a new customer. In 1998 the agency won a golden Cannes lion . In 1999 Springer & Jacoby was considered "the advertising agency icon" in the agency and advertising industry. In addition to employing top creatives, the agency knew how to discover and train numerous creative talents. Springer & Jacoby was therefore considered a creative forge for young, ambitious creative minds. Nine of the top ten agencies in Germany were later run by former Springer & Jacoby employees. In 2000, Springer & Jacoby gave the American advertising holding company True North (now IPG) a stake of 35.5% for the international expansion of the agency. A few months later Springer & Jacoby opened an office in Barcelona .

Springer & Jacoby Planning was founded in 2001 as a business unit ("Unit") for brand strategy, creative planning and consulting. Springer & Jacoby also took a stake in the Italian agency Colnaghi & Manciani and also opened an office in Paris.

In December 2002 Ralf Kober and Paul Holcmann founded Springer & Jacoby Austria. The agency, based in Vienna, operates nationally and internationally.

In 2003 a business unit ("Unit") for direct marketing was founded . When the dot-com bubble burst , Elephant Seven GmbH had to be financially supported. It was merged with a listed company. After that, Springer & Jacoby only held 20% of the newly formed Elephant Seven AG.

An international think tank was opened in the Netherlands in 2004 : Springer & Jacoby Amsterdam. Springer & Jacoby was represented in eight countries and had also largely completed its portfolio of non-classical disciplines.

In 2005, the agency adapted the agency structure to the course of business. The unit system was temporarily disabled. The agency refrained from participating in creative competitions for one year. The change in the top management continued. Springer & Jacoby looked after Osram as a global customer and prevailed in the pitch for the eBay account .

The agency's largest customer, Mercedes-Benz, terminated the collaboration in 2006 after 16 years. The namesake of the agency Reinhard Springer and Konstantin Jacoby sold their remaining shares to Avantaxx AG. This took over the majority of the Springer & Jacoby Group. Immediate action has been taken. The new management reinstated the unit system with clear responsibilities. The agency was adapted to approx. 180 employees in Hamburg due to strict quality criteria. Former top creatives and consultants have been brought back to the agency.

Ten new customers found their way to the agency in 2007 as a client. The agency was awarded a golden Cannes lion for a direct marketing campaign for Olympus . The positioning as a multinational agency group was manifested: Istanbul and Budapest were added as further European offices. The agency worked with the American advertising agency Garrant in Boston and expanded to include cooperation partners in the regions of Russia, China and India. The telecommunications brand AY YILDIZ of the Dutch KPN Group came to Springer & Jacoby in 2008. The agency increased competencies in the field of e-brands, green brands and corporate social responsibility. The British D&AD awarded only two “Yellow Pencils” for Germany this year, one of them to Springer & Jacoby. Together with Hollywood cameraman Michael Ballhaus , the “Ballhaus Project” was created, a climate protection initiative that called for careful use of the earth's energy and resources.

In 2009, the Romanian company Babel Communications joined the Springer & Jacoby network and became Springer & Jacoby Romania.

In 2009 the agency had around 50 employees and the search for an investor was in vain. Lutz Schaffhausen announced the bankruptcy of Springer & Jacoby in 2010. The owner-managed agencies in Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest continue to operate under the agency name Springer & Jacoby.
