Capay Valley AVA (recognized since December 20, 2002) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is located in the northwest of the Yolo County administrative area and is bordered by Napa County , Lake County and Colusa Counties .

The protected designation of origin was established on the initiative of the largest winery in the region, the Capay Valley Vineyards.

Although temperatures are generally higher than in the Napa Valley AVA further north, the vines sprout almost two weeks later. Therefore the very late ripening grape varieties are not available in the area.

The grape varieties used come mainly from Bordeaux or the Rhône .
