The Caranginae are a subfamily of the jacks (Carangidae) consisting of over 100 species .

features

The species of the Caranginae have elongated or high-backed bodies, are strong on the sides or, in a few species, only slightly flattened and covered with small cycloid scales. They are 23 ( Pseudocaranx dinjerra ) to 170 cm ( Caranx ignobilis ) long. The sideline is covered with scales along its entire length or only in the front section. They are very small in Choroscombrus and the high-backed species. The species of the Caranginae have ten trunk vertebrae and 14, in a few cases also 15 tail vertebrae. The anal fin is exactly as long as the soft-radiated section of the dorsal fin or shorter and significantly longer than the distance between the pelvic fins and anal fin. The dorsal fin has seven to eight spines. The pectoral fins are often sickle-shaped, the pelvic fins in most cases small. The caudal fin is forked. In the caudal fin skeleton there are two epuralia and hypuralia that have grown together to form two bone plates. The premaxillary is mobile. A supramaxillary is present. The number of Branchiostegal rays is seven.
