The Carey River is a river in eastern Gippsland in the Australian state of Victoria .

It rises below the Nre Surveyors Creek Camp in the Alpine National Park at an altitude of 1370 m.

From there the Carey River flows southwest and flows into the Wellington River after 17.3 km . On its way it takes on the tributary McFarlane Creek coming from the east .

The Carey River and its tributary lie in largely uninhabited mountainous areas of the Alpine National Park .
