Carl Albert Weber (born January 13, 1856 in Spandau , † September 11, 1931 in Bremen ) was a Prussian , German botanist , grassland scientist and moor researcher. He worked for 30 years at the Prussian Moor Research Station in Bremen. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " CAWeber ".

Life

Carl Albert Weber studied natural sciences in Berlin in 1875 and in Würzburg from 1876 . As assistant botanist Julius Sachs , he worked on the assimilation of the plants and in 1879 with the thesis " specific assimilation About Energy " at the University of Würzburg Dr. phil. PhD. After passing the state examination for higher teaching qualifications, in 1884 he took a position as a teacher of natural sciences at the Hohenwestedt agricultural college in Holstein. In addition to teaching, he wrote highly regarded textbooks . His most successful book was the first published in 1889 " Guide to teaching in agricultural chemistry at middle and lower agricultural educational institutions ", of which a total of 20 editions had appeared by 1929.

Most of his spare time in Hohenwestedt used Weber for extensive vegetation studies on the moor areas of Schleswig-Holstein . He gained a high reputation in specialist circles through numerous publications. In 1894 he was appointed as a botanist at the Prussian moor research station in Bremen. He worked there for 30 years until his retirement in 1924. From 1909 he held the title of professor .

Research services

Weber's main focus of work in Bremen included investigations into the original moor vegetation , the botanical composition of the peat and the history of the development of the moors . His main work, the book " About the vegetation and development of the high moor of Augstumal in the Memel Delta " (1902) became groundbreaking for further moor research. He dedicates a considerable part of his work to agronomic questions of bog culture. As a botanist, he was able to give farmers helpful advice on planting meadows and pastures on peatland.

Most of Weber's publications in the field of grassland science were published in the series “Work of the German Agricultural Society”. His most important contribution on weeds in meadows and pastures is the monograph " Der Duwock (Equisetum palustre) " (1902). Noteworthy for agricultural botany is his " Key to determining the most important agricultural grasses in Germany in the flowerless state " (1924, several editions). In 1910 the German Agricultural Society awarded him the Silver Max Eyth Commemorative Coin for his services in the fields of agricultural botany, grassland science and moor research.

CA Weber medal

The German Society for Moor and Peat Studies (DGMT) awards the Carl Albert Weber Medal as an award "to people who have made a special contribution to moor and peat science".
