Carl Diethelm Meyer

Carl Diethelm Meyer (born January 28, 1840 in Baden in the canton of Aargau ; † October 13, 1884 in Munich ) was a Swiss genre and portrait painter .

Life

Born the son of a beer brewer, Carl Diethelm Meyer was encouraged to train as a painter by his uncle, the painter Jakob Mayer-Attenhofer (1806–1885). At the age of 17, Meyer came to Melchior Paul von Deschwanden's workshop in Stans .

Since November 3, 1858 Meyer studied in the class of antiquities at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich . From 1859 he also attended Professor Hermann Anschütz's painting school .

In 1863 he returned to Switzerland and in 1864 came to Paris to the École des Beaux-Arts and to the painting school of Alexandre Cabanel . Meyer's painting was also influenced by Jules Breton .

In 1867 he returned to Aargau. In 1869 he came back to Munich and studied there at the painting school of Baron Arthur von Ramberg . He then stayed in Munich as a freelance artist and took part in art exhibitions.

Meyer married the daughter of a Swiss man who was established in Munich in 1882 and died of an incurable disease at the age of 44.
