Karl Edel (politician)

Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Edel , also Carl Franz Wilhelm Edel , von Edel since 1879 (born August 10, 1806 in Aschaffenburg , † September 16, 1890 in Würzburg ) was a German lawyer and politician.

Edel studied philosophy at the Lyzeum from 1821 to 1826, then law in Aschaffenburg, then in Würzburg and Heidelberg . In 1834 he became a regional court assessor in Landshut and Straubing , and in 1836 he worked at the regional court in Kissingen . In 1838 he became a government assessor in Würzburg and from 1840 until his death Edel was professor of criminal law at the University of Würzburg . He wrote numerous comments, in particular on police law and Bavarian constitutional issues.

Edel belonged to the pre-parliament and from May 1848 to the end of May 1849 was a member of the Hofheim parliament in the Frankfurt National Assembly . He was a member of the Rules Committee and the Constitutional Committee in the Paulskirche and was instrumental in drafting important laws.

From 1845 to 1847 and from 1855 to 1861 he was a liberal member of the Bavarian state parliament. From 1868 to 1871 he was a non-attached member of the Customs Parliament and from 1871 to 1874 a non-attached member of the Reichstag , in which he represented the constituency of Schwaben 5 (Kaufbeuren).

Karl Edel was the founding chairman of the Würzburg section of the German Alpine Club in 1876 . The Karl-von-Edel-Hütte is named after him.
