Carl Friedrich Pogge (born December 27, 1752 in Greifswald ; † November 30, 1840 there ) was a German merchant and coin collector.

Life

Carl Friedrich Pogge came in Mecklenburg and Pomerania local family Pogge . He was the son of Carl Heinrich Pogge (1720–1785), merchant, spice dealer and pharmacist in Greifswald, and his wife Ilsabe Dorothea Cramer (1730–1753).

Pogge himself was councilor in Greifswald from 1786 to 1792 and belonged to the Schonenfahrercompagnie . The Royal Swedish Commerce Council ran an extensive wholesale trade in Swedish Pomerania and later in the Pomerania province .

In addition to his commercial activities, he devoted himself to the history of Pomerania and in particular to numismatics . He came into possession of a large coin collection, for which he himself compiled a handwritten catalog. This collection was the largest in Pomerania in 1827 with 1,039 coins from Pomerania, 4923 medieval and 959 ancient coins and 1,048 replicas. In addition to 5456 silver coins , it contained 409 gold coins . Pogge also supplied valuable coins for the Rügisch-Pomeranian History Society.

The value of the coin collection, which remained in the possession of the Pogge family as a family fideikommiss , was estimated in the 1860s at 60,000 Thaler Prussian Courant . In 1881 part of the coin collection came to the Provincial Museum for New Western Pomerania and Rügen in Stralsund . Pogge's descendants had another part of the collection, including the Jakobslöser , auctioned by L. & L. Hamburger in Frankfurt / Main at the end of November 1903.

Pogge donated large amounts of money to various charitable institutions in the city of Greifswald. He donated 2,000 thalers (“Poggesche Foundation”) for the so-called “nursery” or “toddler preservation institution”, a kind of preschool for the smaller children of poor parents, and 3,000 thalers for the poor hospital (“Poggesches Legat”).

Carl Friedrich Pogge was married to Friederica von Vahl. He was also the uncle of Carl Pogge (1763-1831) from the line of famous Mecklenburg farmers.
