Carl Göbel (born October 8, 1857 in Henneberg ; † October 12, 1940 in Meiningen ) was a German architect and builder of the late 19th and early 20th centuries who worked in the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen and especially in the residential city of Meiningen. With his numerous villas and apartment buildings he played a major role in shaping the Meiningen townscape.

Life

Carl Göbel was born as the son of a brickworks owner in Henneberg. Due to his exceptional academic achievements, he received a scholarship from Duke Georg II from the Bernhard and Marienstiftung . From 1875 to 1878 he used this to study architecture and building management at the Herzoglich Braunschweigische Baugewerkschule Holzminden . After several years of wandering , Göbel found a job in the technical drawing office for the construction of the Neudietendorf – Ritschenhausen railway line .

In 1885, government building officer and senior building officer Otto Hoppe brought him to the ducal ministerial office in Meiningen. As Hoppes assistant he took over the construction management for the renovation of the Meiningen town church until 1889 . He then went on to study architecture for two years at the Technical University (Berlin-) Charlottenburg . As a ducal site manager and court architect, he was barred from carrying out private assignments. Carl Göbel went into business for himself and on January 1st, 1900 founded the construction office for architecture and construction work in Meiningen . By 1914 he had built over 60 buildings. In 1902 he became a member of the Freemason Lodge Charlotte to the Three Carnations . In 1935 he was arrested as a Freemason by the National Socialists , but was soon released again.

Carl Göbel was married and had three children. He was involved in sports and a fan of ice bathing , which he consistently pursued until his death. In 1940 he died in Meiningen of the consequences of pneumonia that he contracted during his last ice bath in the Werra .

Works

Carl Göbel created numerous residential buildings and villas, which particularly shape the townscape in Meiningen. The characteristic of his houses, mostly in Art Nouveau and Historicism , are brick and natural stone masonry, towers and bay windows. Examples:

  • Crematorium at Meiningen Park Cemetery

Most of its buildings are listed as historical monuments . These are listed in the list of cultural monuments in Meiningen .
