Carl Haeberlin

Carl Haeberlin (born December 15, 1870 in Ranchi , India ; † November 12, 1954 in Wyk auf Föhr ) was a German doctor and local researcher . He founded the Dr. Carl Haeberlin Museum ( Friesenmuseum ) in Wyk auf Föhr.

life and work

Haeberlin was born in India as the son of a Protestant missionary . The family returned to Germany in the Black Forest in 1873 and settled in Swabia , where Haeberlin spent his youth. He attended high schools in Ludwigsburg, Stuttgart and Heilbronn.

He studied medicine in Göttingen, Munich and Tübingen , where he passed the state examination in 1895 and obtained his doctorate. He did his military service in Strasbourg. He then worked as an assistant doctor in Tübingen and Stuttgart before embarking on a psychiatric study trip to Paris. In 1902 he moved to Wyk auf Föhr and opened a doctor's practice there . In the same year he became co-founder and chairman of the natural science-cultural-historical association Föhr. In addition to his work as a spa doctor, Haeberlin also dealt intensively with marine medicine, natural science topics and folklore research. He was also a member of a druid lodge.

In 1906 Haeberlin published the Wyker Chronicle on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the town, and in 1919 the chronicle of the seaside resort Wyk for the 100th anniversary of the seaside resort.

The local history museum of Wyk (today: Friesenmuseum) in the district of Boldixum, which he initiated in 1906 and founded in 1908 and which deals with customs, history, folk art and the earlier way of life on the island, was named after him in 1927 in recognition of his services. The exhibition includes exhibits from the Viking Age , seafaring, paintings with local motifs - including works by the Föhr painter Paul Lehmann-Brauns .

With Carl Gmelin , he participated in the development of the bioclimatic research institute in Wyk from 1925, which was inaugurated in 1928.

Haeberlin's widow Leonore died on April 27, 1994 in Wyk auf Föhr at the age of 94.
