Life

As the son of a comb maker, he attended the Nuremberg Art School from 1858 due to his talent for drawing. After completing his studies in 1861, he joined the studio of the architect Matthias Berger in Munich as a draftsman . After four years of activity, after a brief activity in the restoration of the cathedral in Augsburg, he entered the painter's studio of the Ritter brothers in Nuremberg to devote himself to watercolor painting . During this time he made drawings of Nuremberg views and church furnishings in connection with an order from the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin .

According to his own statements, his work at Ferdinand von Quast was equivalent to a “university” and enabled him to work out his mentor's competition design in the competition for the Berlin Cathedral .

Under the direction of Quasts, he took part alongside Georg Christian Friedrich Lisch on the research trip to the island of Rügen in order to travel to Italy as a draftsman for a year with Ernst aus'm Weerth (1829–1909) after the Franco-German War .

After being employed as curator of the Bavarian Industrial Museum in Nuremberg in 1872, he married Lina Kellner, the daughter of the Nuremberg glass painter Georg Kellner. In 1878 or 1879 his son Hans Hammer was born, who later became a painter. In 1879 he was appointed to the Karlsruhe School of Applied Arts, which he headed as director from 1885.

Following the death of Adolf Gnauth in 1885, he was his successor at the Nuremberg School of Applied Arts .
