He came from the Pomeranian-Neumark noble family von Schöning and was a son of Major General Emanuel von Schöning (1690–1757). His mother Auguste Christiane (1731–1791) was a daughter of Major General Georg Friedrich von Oldenburg .

He began as a flag junior around 1761 and was promoted to lieutenant in the regiment in 23 years . He then worked for 4 years as a recruiting officer in the Principality of Ansbach and in the Principality of Bayreuth .

In 1786 he married Charlotte von Beerfelde from the Brandenburg noble von Beerfelde family , a daughter of Hans Sigismund von Beerfelde , district administrator in the Lebuser district. After her death he married her sister Amalie von Beerfelde. In 1788 Schöning left the army. Thanks to the support of his father-in-law, Schöning succeeded him as district administrator of the Lubusz district in the same year . Schöning remained in office until 1803.

From Schöning's first marriage to Charlotte von Beerfelde a daughter Auguste emerged; she married General Adolf Eduard von Thile . From Schöning's second marriage to Amalie von Beerfelde, three children emerged.
