Carl Ludwig Schläpfer
Carl Ludwig Schläpfer (born November 16, 1833 in Naples , † October 7, 1916 in Fratte die Salerno ( Campania ); resident in Rehetobel ) was a Swiss industrialist and textile entrepreneur from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .
Life
Carl Ludwig Schläpfer was a son of Johann Conrad Schläpfer , co-founder of the textile company Schläpfer Wenner and Compagnie in Fratte die Salerno, and Enrichetta Stefania Just. In 1861 he married Stephanie Wenner, daughter of Friedrich Albert Wenner . He entered into a second marriage in 1886 with Elisa Fries, daughter of David Fries . Schläpfer attended the St. Gallen industrial school until 1850 . Then he trained as a chemist in his father's company. In this he worked from 1856 as authorized signatory and from 1871 to 1881 as technical director. From 1881 to 1900 he was a leading member of the management. Under Schläpfer's direction , the company, which included spinning mills , weaving mills , dye works and finishes , enjoyed rapid growth. In 1899 it employed around 2500 people. Schläpfer also founded a potato starch and a cement factory . He owned two farms near Salerno . On these he tried out new cultivation methods. In 1916, the Schlaepfer Wenner und Compagnie merged with the Aselmeyer und Compagnie in Salerno founded by David Vonwiller . Schläpfer's brother Conrad Gustav Schläpfer worked in their management . The Schläpfer family held a quarter of the new company's share capital . This came into Italian hands in 1918 under pressure from nationalist circles . Schläpfer was president of the community of foreigners founded in 1871 in Fratte di Salerno. He was Vice President of the local Chamber of Commerce and was a government representative at the Salerno trade school . He received an honor as Cavaliere della Corona d'Italia .
