Carl Friedrich Ludwig Mathies (born September 13, 1820 in Visselhövede , † March 13, 1895 in Gotha ) was a German insurance manager .

Life

Carl Mathies was born to the married couple Friedrich August (1790-1870) and Anna Maria Sophia Pape (1795-1865). His father Friedrich was a businessman and tax collector. At the age of 15, Carl Mathies began a three-year apprenticeship as a businessman in Stade and then worked as a clerk in Harburg until 1842 . From 1842 to 1847 Mathies ran a freight forwarding business in Harburg , then stepped down to take up a job at the Royal Hanoverian Railway in Hanover as a freight expedition . Seven years later, in 1854, he became a railway goods manager, but left the railway company a year later.

In 1856 he became general agent of Gothaer Feuerversicherungsbank for Germany in Hanover. On the side, Mathies founded a freight forwarding and commissioning company . In 1863, at the age of 43, he began his career with the insurance bank by being elected as an accountant to the administration of the insurance bank. From 1882 this post was called "Director". To pursue this activity, he moved to his employer's headquarters in Gotha in 1882. The Gotha address book from 1890/91 shows the residential address "Auguststraße 2" (now Huttenstraße, today's "Ärztehaus am Mohren", formerly "Knevelshaus"). The seat of the fire insurance bank was at that time at Bismarckstrasse 12 (now Bahnhofstrasse), before the house opposite, house no. 5a was completed in 1874 as a new office. Appointed general manager in 1887, he retired in 1888 at the age of 68. He was a member of the Gotha Freemason Lodge Ernst zum Compaß and at times its master from the chair .

Carl Mathies married Louise Juliane Berkefeld (1825-1902) in Harburg on April 24, 1848, the daughter of the city treasurer and city ​​court procurator Johann Georg Heinrich and his wife Bernhardine Wilhelmine Magdalene Deyke. The couple had the following children:
