Carl Gustav Hermann Salemann ( Russian Карл Германович Залеман , Karl Hermanovitch Saleman * December 28, 1849 . Jul / 9. January  1850 greg. In Tallinn , Governorate of Estonia , Russian Empire , † November 30 jul. / 13. December  1916 greg. in Petrograd ) was a Russian Iranist and university professor .

Life

Salemann's Baltic German parents were the Russian Lieutenant Colonel Hermann Salemann and his wife Jenny Louise Reinholdine, born von Böningh. Salemann attended the cathedral school in Reval from 1859-1867 and then studied oriental studies at the University of St. Petersburg . In 1871 he became a candidate and in 1875 a master's degree in Persian philology . In 1876 he became a private lecturer in Old Persian , Zend- Avesta and Pehlevi .

Salemann became an assistant librarian in 1875 and a librarian at St. Petersburg University in 1879 . He became an adjunct in 1886 , an extraordinary member in 1889 and then a full member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in 1895 .

In 1890 Salemann became director of the Academy's Asian Museum. The University of Giessen awarded him an honorary doctorate . In 1897 he led a scientific expedition to the western Pamirs with the academician Koržinsky . In 1898 he became a corresponding member of the Estonian Literary Society . In 1908 he was appointed to the Privy Council (3rd class ).

Salemann worked, among other things, on the Russian Turfan manuscripts that Vsevolod Iwanowitsch Roborowski (1856-1910) and Pyotr Kuzmitsch Koslow (1863-1935) had discovered.
