death

In the wake of the events of the US film producer Harvey Weinstein over allegations of sexual assault in October 2017, there were reports in the United Kingdom of similar incidents in British political circles, as a result of which the country's Secretary of Defense, Michael Fallon, was also reported , had to resign. After Jones received reports of such misconduct by his minister, he dismissed him on November 3, 2017. On the same day Sargeant's membership in the party was suspended, which was accompanied by the loss of the post of whip in his faction. Sargeant denied all allegations and complained to interlocutors on the morning of November 7, 2017 that he still did not know what was being held against him. His body was found in his home in Connah's Quay late that morning. British media were unanimous in assuming that he suicide committed what the competent coroner confirmed a few days later. Sargeant left behind his wife Bridget and two grown children.

In a posthumously published correspondence between the Labor Party and Sargeant's lawyer, the latter rejected the allegations made against his client and at the same time complained that the dismissal and party suspension procedures were equivalent to a preliminary conviction. Jones then announced an independent investigation into the matter. At the same time, he pointed out that, given the circumstances, he could not have acted otherwise

In early February 2018, his then twenty-three-year-old son Jack won the by -election for the seat in the Welsh National Assembly vacated by Sargeant's death by a large margin.
