Life

Schuster was the son of the politician of the same name, Carl Schuster , who was Lord Mayor of Freiburg from 1871 to 1888. From 1872 to 1877 he studied architecture at the Technical University of Karlsruhe . In 1883 he began studying at the Grand Ducal Baden Art School in Karlsruhe with Gustav Schönleber , which he completed in 1886. Schuster was a member of the artists' association "Breisgauer Fünfer" founded in Freiburg in 1899. His architecture studies are also reflected in his work. His architectural painting shows excerpts of house facades, half-timbered constructions, inner courtyard and balcony situations, streets and alleys in the rural surroundings of Freiburg and Alsace with documentary accuracy. He also painted city and harbor views in northern Italy, Spain and the Netherlands as well as landscapes and chapels in the Black Forest.
