Carl Spindler (born December 11, 1841 in Berlin , † October 18, 1902 in Köpenick ) was a German entrepreneur and secret councilor .

Life

Carl Spindler took over the laundry company W. Spindler in Spindlersfeld , a suburb of Köpenick named after the Spindlers, from his father Wilhelm Spindler . He was significantly involved in further industrialization, in particular in the construction of settlements in Spindlersfeld and the adjacent Köllnische suburb of Köpenick on the left bank of the Spree .

Spindler was one of the progressive entrepreneurs of his time, the working conditions in the factory were good, he set up social welfare systems for the employees, and among his numerous donations and foundations there was also the (wooden) Müggelturm in the Müggelberg Mountains southeast of Köpenick, the Spindlerbrunnen on the Spittelmarkt as well as the elaborate lead windows of the town hall Köpenick. Even the railway line to Spindlersfeld, inaugurated in 1892, was co-financed by him (also for economic reasons). The founding of the Spindlersfeld rowing club , which was founded as a company sports club in 1878 and at that time drove and won the first rowing regatta on the Oberspree , goes back to him .

He supported the construction of many publicly usable buildings in Köpenick and in the Thuringian spa town of Bad Tabarz , where he took over his father's summer residence and was instrumental in the development of tourism there by founding a "tourism committee". Spindler was also one of the co-founders of the Thuringian Forest Association and the Tabarzer Kirchenbauverein from 1892.

For his numerous services, Carl Spindler was made an honorary citizen of the city of Köpenick in 1898 . After his death, his sons Wilhelm, Ernst and Erich took over the business. The laundries had already achieved a monopoly-like position in the region, mainly due to the chemical cleaning introduced in 1853 , in whose further development Spindler's dye works also stood out.

Carl Spindler was buried in a family grave erected by his brother-in-law Walter Kyllmann in 1886 for the Spindler family in the old cemetery in front of Prenzlauer Tor (grave location: Allee II – 1a). His grave is dedicated to the city of Berlin as an honorary grave . The Tabarz community had a memorial stone erected in the spa gardens.
