Carl Zewy

Carl Zewy (born April 21, 1855 in Vienna ; † June 20, 1929 there ) was an Austrian genre painter.

Zewy studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under August Eisenmenger and at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich , but was not enrolled there.

After completing his studies, Zewy returned to Vienna and dealt with genre painting. He also illustrated books. He was friends with the painters Isidor Kaufmann , Josef Gisela and Johann Hamza . Zewy's circle of friends also included the illustrator and caricaturist Karl Elleder and the film director Fritz Lang . Zewy received many orders from the Viennese art dealer Friedrich Schwarz.

Zewy exhibited regularly at the exhibitions of the Vienna Künstlerhaus . Many of his paintings appeared in the " Gartenlaube " and on postcards.

On April 24, 1925, Zewy was awarded the title “Citizen of the City of Vienna”.
