Carl von Perbandt (born May 12, 1832 in Langendorf in East Prussia , † April 6, 1911 in Nahmgeist ) was a German landscape painter who worked in the United States . He belongs to the Düsseldorf School of Painting .

Life

Perbandt was a member of the aristocratic East Prussian family von Perbrandt . His parents were Otto Friedrich Julius von Perbandt (* July 2, 1793; † April 16, 1878) and his wife Ida Sophie Ernestine von der Groeben (* October 8, 1795; † February 10, 1857). Perbandt's younger sister Lina von Perbandt (1836–1884) was also a landscape painter, his brother Fedor Karl Otto Gustav (1827–1906) was a writer.

He studied painting at the Düsseldorf Academy with Andreas Achenbach and Carl Friedrich Lessing , although his determination to become an artist and his refusal to pursue a military career angered his family.

After serving in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 , Perbandt and his family moved to his brother's estate in Falkenhorst in East Prussia. Shortly afterwards he secretly left Prussia, leaving his wife and children behind. He first went to the east coast of the United States, where he settled in New York and painted landscapes of New Jersey , Vermont , and Ulster County , New York .

In 1876 Perbandt moved to Northern California. He traveled and painted with Jules Tavernier (1844–1889) in Monterey and finally settled in San Francisco in 1877 , where he temporarily shared a studio with Henry Raschen (1854–1937). Raschen was born in Prussia, but had emigrated to California with his family as a boy. Perbandt and Raschen also traveled together, "lived the bohemian life" and painted views of Northern California, particularly Sonoma , Humboldt Counties , and Mendocino Counties . For some time they lived in Fort Ross among the Pomo Indians and shared a studio there.

In his later years in San Francisco, he began again to paint panoramic views of the city and the Golden Gate . He returned to Prussia in 1903 and lived there until his death in 1911.

Many of the paintings he left behind in San Francisco were lost in the 1906 earthquake .
